Langham Hotel
Summary
Housed in the former Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, the historic Langham Hotel was originally built in 1922 and was designated as a Boston Landmark in 1978. The hotel recently underwent a monumental renovation, including a makeover of the lobby, guest rooms, and 13,000 square feet of event space. As part of the renovation, Shawmut Design & Construction hired Boston Light & Sound® (BL&S) to provide a wide bandwidth, high-definition digital media infrastructure across three floors, including the hotel’s new ballrooms. The hotel owners were concerned about preserving the aesthetic integrity of the special event space, which features murals from NC Wyeth as well as traditional mahogany furnishings.
BL&S brought considerable experience installing top-of-the-line AV equipment while preserving the historic integrity of a building. The BL&S team installed a professional-grade 4K-capable system that can support any HDBaseT digital media. In addition, the system infrastructure supports DMX for lighting, Dante distribution for audio, as well as any IP-based system. There are multiple cloud-served background music servers, Crestron devices for video and audio conferencing, plus a combination of 4K 75" TVs and projectors, all seamlessly integrated so as not to detract from the hotel architecture. The new infrastructure makes it easy to plug into any jack and route music via speakers in the club lounge and lobby or pipe it across conference rooms, ballrooms, bathrooms, and elevators. In the ballroom, the team installed multi-media laser projectors and screens that can emerge and retract from the ceiling at the push of a button. This allows for professional-grade TV, video, audio, and power – all in one cable – without taking away from the architecturally significant structure.
The BL&S team’s agility served them well when the project hit a major obstacle: Like many construction sites, the Langham faced a three-month shut down due to the pandemic. To help keep the project on track, BL&S built equipment racks at its Brighton warehouse during the shutdown. This pre-work by BL&S helped the hotel minimize downtime once the site reopened.
The renovation was completed in spring 2021, with a state-of-the-art AV system the owners are proud of.
The installation included three cinema systems, a black box theatre AV system, lobby music and displays run by QSC Q-Sys Core 510s in a fully redundant setup, Dolby IMS 3000 Digital Cinema Servers, and cinema loudspeaker systems from QSC. The project also included a full performance sound system, including line array speakers from Fulcrum Acoustics with specialty custom rigging by Polar Focus, a Yamaha CL-3 mixing console, and ULX-D wireless mics from Shure. Alternative content video switching and distribution was provided by a building-wide Crestron DM System. This configuration implemented by BL&S gives the theatre the flexibility to support everything from 4K digital cinema sources to 1080P HD video to legacy composite video. In addition, the new Dante digital audio over IP network makes it possible to send or receive sound to any location through the building.

Inari
Summary
When Inari’s multi-purpose cafeteria and meeting spaces needed a tech refresh, Boston Light & Sound delivered a tailored solution that embraced flexibility and reliability. By upgrading and enhancing the existing Crestron NVX platform to integrate into Inari’s owner-furnished Microsoft Teams systems, our team modernized our client’s video distribution. The Boston Light & Sound team upgraded control systems and switches, added new NVX endpoints, and integrated a PTZ Optics auto-tracking camera for maximum flexibility during meetings with or without Inari IT support.
By re-tuning the audio system with Shure MXA ceiling mics and wireless microphones to ensure clarity across all room configurations, our team managed to make the system deliver consistent sound and video performance when spaces are divided, combined, or fully open for presentations. With mobile display carts, intuitive control, and minimal tech oversight, the space now supports conferences and meetings of any size, promoting spontaneous collaboration and formal presentations.
"I also wanted to take a moment to reflect on our very successful All Hands meeting on December 16th. The feedback from the attendees has been overwhelmingly positive, particularly regarding the improved setup and noticeably better sound quality. A huge thanks to you and the team at BLS that supported Inari."
