Langham Hotel, Boston ::

Housed in the former Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, the historic Langham Hotel was originally built in 1922 and was designated as a Boston Landmark in 1978. The hotel recently underwent a monumental renovation, including a makeover of the lobby, guest rooms, and 13,000 square feet of event space. As part of the renovation, Shawmut Design & Construction hired Boston Light & Sound® (BL&S) to provide a wide bandwidth, high-definition digital media infrastructure across three floors, including the hotel’s new ballrooms. The hotel owners were concerned about preserving the aesthetic integrity of the special event space, which features murals from NC Wyeth

as well as traditional mahogany furnishings.

BL&S brought considerable experience installing top-of-the-line AV equipment while preserving the historic integrity of a building. The BL&S team installed a professional-grade 4K-capable system that can support any HDBaseT digital media. In addition, the system infrastructure supports DMX for lighting, Dante distribution for audio, as well as any IP-based system. There are multiple cloud-served background music servers, Crestron devices for video and audio conferencing, plus a combination of 4K 75" TVs and projectors, all seamlessly integrated so as not to detract from the hotel architecture. The new infrastructure makes it easy to plug into any jack and route music via speakers in the club lounge and lobby or pipe it across conference rooms, ballrooms, bathrooms, and elevators. In the ballroom, the team installed multi-media laser projectors and screens that can emerge and retract from the ceiling at the push of a button. This allows for professional-grade TV, video, audio, and power – all in one cable – without taking away from the architecturally significant structure.

The BL&S team’s agility served them well when the project hit a major obstacle: Like many construction sites, the Langham faced a three-month shut down due to the pandemic. To help keep the project on track, BL&S built equipment racks at its Brighton warehouse during the shutdown. This pre-work by BL&S helped the hotel minimize downtime once the site reopened.

The renovation was completed in spring 2021, with a state-of-the-art AV system the owners are proud of.

Conservation Law Foundation ::

The Conservation Law Foundation (CLF) advocates for New Englanders, forging innovative paths to environmental progress and economic prosperity. To further engage the community, the foundation wanted to create a distinctive video wall in their lobby to display their community work. They hired Boston Light & Sound® (BL&S) to install the video wall, along with audio-visual equipment for their multi-purpose training room and 12-person conference room.

The team worked hand in hand with Berkeley Building to find creative

pathways through the older building and make retrofits to accommodate the new equipment.

For the video wall, BL&S installed six 50" displays in a 2x3 configuration. Since the video displays weren’t a standard size, BL&S custom sized CLF’s graphics to ensure optimal presentation on the screens. In addition, the team connected CLF’s conference room computers to the presentation system, allowing seamless integration with the new videoconferencing platform. This way, any CLF employee can easily present from their own computer.

The client was pleased with the result, and was thankful that BL&S was able to install the equipment within their tight timeframe.

Zuma Restaurant ::

Zuma Restaurant couples high-end dining with a nightlife environment. For its first foray into the Boston market, Zuma owners needed a vendor who could deliver exceptional sound throughout the venue. Their loudspeaker and amplifier manufacturer, d&b audiotechnik, recommended Boston Light & Sound® (BL&S) for the complex audio installation.

The BL&S team’s extensive audio experience enabled them to deliver exceptional sound in this unique environment. In preparation for the restaurant launch, the BL&S team created multiple audio zones for the bar, DJ area,

and dining area, each with their own controls and sound content. They carefully configured 31 speakers and seven subwoofers, running off of five four-channel amplifiers and an audio processor. They placed the speakers in different directions to create separate audio zones, and ensured the speakers visually aligned with restaurant’s distinctive, custom-designed wood-slatted ceiling.

The owners were very pleased with the installation, and feel it enhances the ambiance of the restaurant.

Hotel Marlowe ::

Hotel Marlowe is a luxury boutique hotel located near the Charles River in Cambridge, MA. This AAA Four Diamond award winner prides itself
on offering the very best to its guests. The hotel recently partnered with
Boston Light & Sound® (BL&S) to bring high-end audiovisual experiences
indoors and out.

Upgrading the Presidential Suite

The hotel’s 1,200 sq. ft. Presidential Suite combines sumptuous accom- modations with the latest technology. To extend this approach to their

AV equipment, the hotel hired BL&S to design a high-end AV system that would integrate well with the luxurious surroundings. The equipment needed to be installed and programmed in a short timeframe when the suite wasn’t booked.

The BL&S team installed a 70" 4K flat panel TV above a built-in credenza, which houses the audio/video equipment racks. They also installed a Crestron Control System, making it easy for guests to control ceiling speakers and the surround sound system from any room in the suite.

Presenting movies outdoors

The hotel management also wanted to show movies during their gala to unveil a new steampunk sculpture in their courtyard. They asked BL&S to design a system that would work well for this outdoor venue.

BL&S installed a high-definition projector and commercial grade Blu-ray player on the second floor of the hotel, enabling the hotel to project movies out the window onto a wall in the courtyard. To improve sound quality in the space, BL&S also installed new outdoor speakers. This provides guests with the full theatre experience in a unique setting. The gala went off without a hitch. The hotel now has a permanent projector in place that also allows guests to play movies during special events.

Boston College Cabaret Room ::

Boston College students can look forward to kicking back in the school’s new Cabaret Room, a multi-use student activity space. This flexible space was redesigned to make it easy to enjoy high quality audio and video. Boston Light & Sound® (BL&S) was brought in to make this vision a reality.

Integrating audio and video controls

Ease of use was critical to the project, which required integration of a wide
range of audio and video equipment, including a Crestron DM (digital media) system for video transmission and control system, BSS London digital audio

processor, wired and wireless mics, and an 8,000 lumen high resolution video projector. The BL&S team made it easy for students to plug into the audiovisual system at multiple input panels throughout the room and control the functions via a simplified touch screen control panel. For personal use, students can plug in their PC to one of the flat screen TVs located throughout the room.

Cost-effective music playback solutions

Upon completion of the installation it was clear that the students required additional features that were not part of the initial design. Students envisioned being able to plug in their iPods and play prerecorded music, watch big games, and support guest DJs in the Cabaret Room. BL&S came up with a creative solution to add these capabilities in a cost-effective manner. By rerouting wiring and adding TV tuners, they were able to fulfill all the students’ requirements.

Integrating audio/video in a short timeframe

As with many college projects, there was a tight time frame to complete work while students were on break. To meet the compressed project schedule, BL&S built and tested all the equipment at their facilities beforehand to minimize time needed on-site. This helped ensure that the project remained on schedule.

A great entertainment space

The work paid off. Students now have access to live music reinforcement, prerecorded music playback for guest DJ inputs or iPod use, computer presentations, Blu-ray video presentations, TV broadcasts, and gaming on the big screen.
