Setting the horror classic Dracula to a new score performed live by the Philip Glass Ensemble, Pomegranate Arts produced a worldwide tour of the 1931 film starring Bela Lugosi. They selected BL&S to present the film with live music accompaniment
based on the company’s previous work with Philip Glass. Previously, BL&S provided the 70mm projection system for Mr. Glass’s "Monsters of Grace" 3D film opera as it traveled around the world.
Presenting a film along to live music involves providing extremely crisp, bright projection that won’t be washed out by the orchestra lights. To accomplish this, the BL&S team carefully selected the appropriate screen and ensured there was sufficient light source to cut through any ambient light in the theatre. They chose equipment that would be as inconspicuous as possible so as not to detract from the live performance.
The system encompassed a two-projector changeover system that BL&S installed for each presentation of the classic film during the three-month tour. To cope with the varied venue proportions and projection positions, the projectors were trouped in individual, smaller cases along with a wide range of lenses.
The results were outstanding. Audiences throughout the US and Europe were treated to a new interpretation of one of the first talkies, proving Bela Lugosi was right when he said "Dracula never dies."
