This regional theatre circuit has been showing sub-run movies to audiences throughout New England for more than 40 years. Boston Light & Sound's relationship with the Patriot Theatre began back in the 1960s when BL&S co-founder Chapin Cutler worked as a projectionist for owner and founder Phil Scott at the Wollaston Theatre in Quincy.
BL&S works with many independent and regional theatres in the region. In the mid 1990s, BL&S began providing service on an emergency and routine basis to the Patriot Theatres. Understanding the unique challenges of running a regional circuit, the BL&S team advises theatre owners on achieving and maintaining the best quality exhibition while keeping overhead costs low. Often this involves designing and installing sound and projection equipment in stages, enabling independent operators to upgrade their facilities in a way that is affordable and does not compromise quality.
One example of this approach is the staged installation of Dolby stereo over a span of four years. Year one involved installing a Dolby processor and running it through a mono sound system. In the following year, the team installed stereo left and right speakers. The next year they added subwoofers, giving their audiences the big bass sound experience. The fourth year, they completed the cinema projection system installation with surround sound.
"We love to support the independent and regional theatres in our area," Chapin said. "Patriot Cinemas provides entertainment to people throughout our region and we’re happy to help them do that for their clients."
