The Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, CA displays one of the world’s finest private collections of European, American, and Asian Art. Oscar-winning film producer and documentarian Charles Guggenheim specifically recommended BL&S to design the museum’s projection system. The company’s expertise with difficult spaces made them uniquely qualified to provide advice and counsel. In keeping with the caliber of collections, Boston Light & Sound designed, built, and installed a 35mm destination film projection system with Dolby Digital sound for the museum’s screening venue.
The existing space required a continued multi-functional performing arts environment, placing constraints on the projection installation. To resolve this challenge, BL&S manufactured a special rollaway screen and speaker tower so the stage could be cleared. The BL&S team also designed and fabricated a new projection room to fit in the orchestra seating area under an existing balcony.
The museum projection system is designed around an electronic Kinoton FP-30ES projector, which rewinds through the gate to provide pre-programmed repeated showings daily of the museum’s two films: "The Art of Norton Simon" and "Sister Wendy at the Norton Simon Museum". The team crafted an AMX system programmed to support traditional film and video audio playback as well as live performances and lectures. Additionally, they equipped the theatre with a multi-format video projection system, sound reinforcement system, and slide projectors.
