Charlestown resident F. Lee Eiseman, a supporter of silent film and live theatre organ accompaniment, approached Boston Light & Sound about presenting the silent film Old Ironsides at the Charlestown Navy Yard, home of Old Ironsides, for the ship's 200th anniversary.
Mr. Eiseman and BL&S principal Chapin Cutler first met in the 1960s when they ran a monthly silent feature night at the Charles Street Meeting House in Boston's Back Bay. Chapin was pleased to have the BL&S team support this unique film presentation. They provided technical advice, including film preparation, equipment assembly, and operation.
The BL&S team installed a 30 x 40' weather-resistant screen supported by sea shipping containers. They built and assembled the necessary projection equipment for running the film at 22 frames per second.
They loaded the equipment into a rental truck located 250 feet away from the screen, Silent film organist Dennis James accompanied the film with a score derived from the original conductor's parts of the film. At appropriate moments, "Old Ironsides" herself supplied the appropriate cannon fire.
Despite a heavy wind, an audience of more than 1,000 attended the historic performance.
