An avid movie buff, Chapin Cutler dreamed of bringing true craftsmanship to the world of film presentation. Larry Shaw, with a background in stage design, electronics, and mechanics, saw the potential to improve film presentation technology. In 1977, the two former projectionists launched Boston Light & Sound (BL&S), a service-oriented company to deliver high-quality projection for on-location dailies.
From their very first project, they set out to achieve the impossible: turning a raw commercial space into a professional screening room. (See photo on right.) Larry and Chapin worked for four days straight, installing projection gear in a non-conventional way to resolve maddening image and sound challenges in the less-than-ideal venue. Their work paid off; the movie's producer proclaimed it the best projection he'd ever seen, even in a Hollywood screening room.
From there, Larry and Chapin were captivated by the idea of carrying movie presentation to the extreme. Over the ensuing years, they honed their craft, gaining a reputation for exemplary workmanship. They became technical experts in the film community, serving the projection needs of everyone from small independent cinemas to international film festivals. They have set up hundreds of dailies projection systems for films ranging from An Officer and a Gentleman to Martin Scorsese's The Departed.

Boston Light & Sound is also known for presenting live orchestra combined with film work, for which they devised special synchronization equipment. Additionally, BL&S handles scores of sneak previews, film festivals, premieres, and other presentations annually. They have worked in such diverse locations as the Hollywood Bowl, the Colusseum in Rome, an amphitheatre in Pompeii, a hillside in Israel, an arena in Dubai, the Karl Marx Theatre in Havana, Cuba, the Palace of Versailles, Radio City Music Hall, Carnegie Hall, St. Petersburg, Russia, and the United Nations Building to name a few.

They've established themselves through absolute insistence on the best quality. "It cannot be done" is not in their vocabulary. For complex jobs, Larry and Chapin have set up a machine shop to design and build specialty projection equipment.

With the addition of a sound division in 1984, BL&S brought their trademark craftsmanship to audio installations. The company's audio engineers provide venues around the world with the opportunity to produce exceptional sound clarity. The audio team has also supported some of the country's most remarkable theatre renovation projects, integrating high-quality sound equipment that matches perfectly with theatre aesthetics.
Their nearly 30 years of expertise in the motion picture and sound industries has earned them a position as one of the nation's leading entertainment technology corporation.
